Town Hall Theatre, 10.00am – 11.30am
Devonport Entertainment Centre, 145 Rooke St, Devonport
Full $30, Concession $26, bookings (03) 6420 2900

Sidney Bechet, composer of 'Petite Fleur', taught himself to play the clarinet as a young boy in New Orleans. By his early 20's, he was a virtuosic star touring Europe with The Southern Syncopated Orchestra and, by this time, he had discovered the soprano saxophone, which he uniquely made his main voice. At home in the USA, he made many wonderful jazz recordings over the years, before taking up permanent residence in France during the 1950's. In this, his last decade, he composed many songs (including ‘Petite Fleur’), and was treated as a star all over Europe - a passionate musician.

The Australians, with French vocalist Tricia Evy, will guide us through the significant musical contributions of musician and composer Sidney Bechet.

Cool Jazz evolved directly from bop in the United States in the late '40s and '50s. It reportedly gained its name by the understated, calm feel of the music, as opposed to the more frenetic Bebop style.  Often seen as a sub-genre of Cool Jazz, West Coast Jazz refers to various styles of jazz music that developed around Los Angeles and San Francisco during the ‘50s.  This concert will showcase works from some of the quintessential musicians of the genre.

Steve Martin (double bass) leads some of Tasmania’s most accomplished musicians, Danny Healy (baritone sax, tenor sax, flute), Fred Bradshaw (alto saxophone), Hayden Dare (trombone), Dan Sulzberger (piano), Kelly Ottaway (vibraphone) and Matthew Ives (drums) in this celebration of West Coast & Cool Jazz.
