This is an authentic approach to playing the up-tempo '8 to the bar' style of Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, and Pete Johnson, and if you learned to play classical piano as a child to about a Grade 3 or 4 standard, that will help you as well. In the winter of 2012, singer songwriter Wendy Matthews went into the Stuart Piano Factory in Newcastle with Brendan St Ledger playing piano and Greg Royal on standup bass. The trio emerged after two days with an EP of live recordings and realised they had captured a long loved, but never delved into, side of Wendy’s music history.

The circumstances they recorded in allow for an intimate and introspective translation of some classic and not so classic Billie Holiday songs, an iconic woman whose soul and music has been long admired. This is an evening of some classic songs and virtuoso musicians, specked with some of Wendy’s iconic songs reworked.
