Duke’s favourites will be performed by the cream of the festival's artists including Julie O’Hara, Ben Jones, Michael McQuaid, Andrea Keller, Eugene Ball, Allan Browne, Nick Haywood and Viktor Zappner. Duke Ellington is regarded as being one of the greatest American composers – alongside with Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Among jazz musicians he is, together with Thelonious Monk, certainly the most important jazz composer. From his early instrumental and orchestral pieces, through to his song writing and some extended compositions, the quality of his music is astounding. Our concert will try to illustrate his greatness as a composer, while showing how improvisation can be an integral part of it.
