Blue Gum Jazz Band

The Blue Gum Jazz Band was formed in 2006 using local musicians from the Burnie area. They play traditional jazz, concentrating on a repertoire of nearly 200 tunes, familiar to many. Led by Kevin Findlay, this seven piece band performs regularly along the North West Coast.

Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz Band

In 1994 trumpet player Allan Gibson moved to Bruny Island from Melbourne where he had led a jazz band since 1980. Suffering from New Orleans deprivation, he was delighted to find other musicians living on the Island who shared his enthusiasm for the sounds of ensemble improvisation, syncopation of simple tunes and the intense four beats to the bar laid down by a New Orleans rhythm section. Allan brought together Mal Kent, Rob O’Connell, Cliff Wright and John Broadby to play the exciting and spontaneous New Orleans style jazz.

Swingtime

A hard-swinging Hobart band, recreating the small-group sounds of Ellington, Goodman, Basie and other groups from that era, Swingtime presents a mixture of swing, jump and jive, blues and an occasional dash of foot-tapping traditional jazz. A group for all occasions whether it be quiet background music, a concert performance or for kicking up one’s heels on the dance-floor.

Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music

2008 at Devonport Jazz will see an appearance from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. Two of the finest ensembles made up of current students, staff and community members associated with the Conservatorium will make a representation on behalf of the contemporary music faculty and to perform original Australian jazz as well as time-honoured standard arrangements. Featured bands will be the Matthew Ives Quintet, Kelly Ottaway's  and Modern Operative.

Recliner

The last two years has seen Recliner develop into Tasmania's premier lounge experience. Recliner has become the centre of Hobart's jazz scene, according to tourist publications and in-flight magazines. Many of Australia's best and most respected jazz musicians have swung by Lizbon Bar on a Saturday night, where Recliner has played for nearly two years, to join in delighting the crowd. The vibe created by this uniquely talented band is unsurpassed.

Ross Challender Big Band

This 17 piece big band was brought together approximately twelve years ago by members of the Launceston RSL Brass Band. The band often plays at corporate functions and has featured in the Launceston production of Guys and Dolls, Festivale, Launceston Carols by Candlelight, Devonport Dance Fiesta 2006 and Classical Meets Jazz 2008. The band features a repertoire from swing era favourites, smooth ballads, big-band numbers and exciting modern arrangements in the Salsa/Latin style. The Ross Challender Big Band features vocalists Denise Sam and Steve Hill.

Matthew Ives Quintet

The contemporary jazz tunes of the Matthew Ives Quintet are flavoured with swing, latin and funk. Students of the Hobart Conservatorium of Music, the Matthew Ives Quintet features outstanding young musicians who make contemporary jazz accessible.

Allan Browne

Allan is one of Australia’s most recognised drummers and jazz luminaries. He has worked with more than 35 international jazz icons and in 2000 was awarded the prestigious Don Banks Award for his contribution to Australian music. Allan's 46 years in Jazz include some 70 CDs and albums, covering the century of genres from early New Orleans to Contemporary Jazz. Allan is an integral part of the 2008 Devonport Jazz Rhythm Section.

Jazz O’Farrell

Andy Farrell has performed professionally on the NW coast for about ten years now, plays a range of instruments but his first love is the piano. He teaches a lot and has had a jazz combo either in or out of schools for over thirty years.

Rob Cox, is a versatile bassist who is 'doing' a doctorate at Uni Tas. NW Coast. He has played in many groups over the years in theatre and jazz circles. He seems to be able to transpose anything into any key at the drop of hat, solos to good effect and is a great extrovert. He is one of life's truly affable fellows!
